Taking Flight

DID you know there are over 5,500 known species of dragonflies in the world? The Indo-Malayan region, southern China and the Indian subcontinent are particularly rich, with more than 1,600 species. In Singapore alone, over 120 species have been recorded, which is about the same number that exist in the whole of Europe!

Fast Facts
1. Dragonflies and damselflies are two closely related insect groups. They both belong to the scientific order Odonata, which means "toothed ones".
2. Males are usually more colourful than females.
3. They love the sun - they need the heat to "warm up" before doing daily activities.
4. They don't bite humans!
5. Even though they have six legs like any other insect, dragonflies can't walk.
6. To spot a dragonfly, you should look for them at a well vegetated pond - they can be seen flying around or resting on water plants. Any time from 9am to noon on a sunny day is best.
