GROWING UP GREEN
A dive course may not be a typical birthday gift for a 10-year-old but Rhea Groves was over the moon when she became the youngest certified PADI Junior Open Water diver in one of the youngest countries in the world, East Timor. This gift gave Renee, Rhea’s mum, an experienced diver, the opportunity to share her passion for the ocean with her children.  Dive Timor Lorosae, a scuba diving centre, was ready to help with the Junior Open Water Course as the stepping-stone to a greener future. In sharing their knowledge with children, dive instructors provide kids with a practical desire to protect their local aquatic environments. Outdoor education gives kids the freedom of self-discovery and is an effective way for them to make sense of their environment.
REEF MURALS
Students at the Quality International School in Dili, East Timor, immersed themselves in the AWARE Kids program and created huge reef murals to illustrate the threats to coral life and how to protect reef ecosystems.  The East Timor mural was created for International Year of the Reef (IYOR), a worldwide campaign to highlight the importance of coral reefs. “There is something magical about knowing you have given kids the desire to make a difference,” said Marianne Woodward, general manager at Dive Timor.
