Palm Oil and the Orangutans

To make way for oil palm plantations, the homes and even the lives of orangutans have been put in danger: because the trees that make up their natural habitat are gone, they can no longer spend their time hanging happily from branches or nosing out tasty fruits. Today, the number of orangutans in the wild is rapidly declining and the species may become extinct within the next 10 years!

The word “orangutan” is derived from a Malay word meaning “person of the forest”. Just how close are orangutans to people? Well, they actually share 97 percent of our genetic makeup! So it’s our responsibility to keep an eye open and do what we can to help these species in peril.
