Birdwatching
A fun hobby to get you outdoors and looking to the trees

You are taking a slow walk
in a forest. You breathe
in the smells around
you. All you hear is
the sound of your
feet crunching the
dry leaf litter as you
make your way through,
swatting mosquitoes that
venture too close. It’s all
quiet ... but then, you
hear something. Not the
buzzing of the mosquitoes
but something more
melodious. A song. A
musical warble that you have never heard before. You look around,
and there it is, an olive brown bird with orange
feathers on the top of its head. You don’t have
a clue what it is, but you know that you need
to find out.
Once home, you dig up a bird book you
remember seeing on your dad’s bookshelf. You
sift through the dusty pages, and there, you
find it – the Straw-Headed Bulbul. For some
reason, the experience has captivated you.
And you want to know more about birds. You
want to see more birds. You want to help them
– as you read on in the book, you find out
that this bulbul is threatened because people
capture them and keep them as pets.
