The Long and Short of It
DID you know that some animals live to over a hundred years old? Or that some insects only live for a few days? Check out some of the longest and shortest lifespans in the animal kingdom.
The mayfly eats only in the larval stage - it takes up to three years for the larva to develop into an adult. Once it becomes an adult though, its time left shortens dramatically. Mature mayflies live for 30 minutes to a few days, depending on the species.
Gastrotrichs are tiny, worm-like organisms that grow to three millimetres long. They live in both freshwater and saltwater ecosystems, and their average lifespan is three to 21 days.
