Uncovered T. Rex Relative
YOU’VE probably heard of the ferocious
Tyrannosaurus rex. These huge dinosaurs most
likely weighed up to 5,400 kilogrammes and
were up to 12.8 metres long – easily some of
the largest land carnivores of all time, who
roamed Earth more than 65 million years ago.
Now, can you imagine a mini-T. rex? Scientists
have recently unveiled a new fossil in China
that could prove the Tyrannosaurus rex
descended from a much smaller dinosaur. The
three-metre long dinosaur fossil was found in
northeastern China, and scientists believe it is
125 million years old! This new species, called
Raptorex kriegsteini, would have been around
during the early Cretaceous period, which
predates T. rex by about 60 million years.
