Speak Up!
Text WINNIE LEUNG
As we put each issue of AGJ together, we always come across readers' fantastic responses to Thinking Caps and the rest of the magazine. It's always heartening to hear your ideas on how to save animals and what you dream to do when you grow up. We often encourage you to write in, but we'd also like you to share your thoughts with your own peers.
Read what some kids from Tanglin Trust School in Singapore had to say about last issue's Thinking Caps ("Fight Poverty? Yes We Can!") by clicking
[here].
For the next edition, we're interested in finding out more about your ambitions and hobbies. What's your favourite subject in school? What do you want to do when you grow up? Do you dream of being an artist, astronaut, diplomat, football player, marine biologist, zookeeper...? How would you like to leave your mark on the world?

Text Nirali Chandaria, Age 10
I am a concerned student and I am writing to discuss the disturbing problems of poverty throughout the world. I strongly request that we all give a donation so as to put an end to this appalling situation! After reading this article I felt passionate to help save the lives of young unfortunate children.
According to I-India [a charity for street children based in Jaipur] 20 cents can feed a meal for one person and $6.30 can provide water for 200 people. Only $13.15 can feed 100 people!!! Is $13.50 too much for each of us to spare? However, the only way to find a long-term solution to this problem is not only to donate money or food, as that would only give temporary help! To alleviate this problem you have to impart skills and education to the people so they can earn their own living. This way they have a more permanent source of money for their daily needs.
Let us hope that with all our efforts, poverty will become history, and everyone will have food, clothing and shelter. For everyone who is reading this I hope you will realise that you are very privileged and help the less fortunate.
Remember:
Show your concern and care,
$13.50 is all you need to spare,
So make the world a happier place for those whom life is not fair!
So everyone, after reading this, I hope you pass your message to everyone you know - everyone together can make a huge difference! Remember to do your part and help the less fortunate.

I'm writing to persuade you to be against poverty in India, as it is very serious and very bad. In 2000 some governments made a new year's resolution to bring 500 million people off the streets. Please can you try to help?
Many people suffer from poverty every day, we can't take such for granted. There are estimated to be over 60 million street children working under the legal age, just for 1 meal a day. Most of them support their whole family. We have avoided poverty because we were born into wealthy families.
There are so many ways where we can give so little but help so much. But not enough people are acting, consequently it's getting worse. If no one tries, many people have to endure pain and die. Surely everyone knows this... We have to help now or they will adapt to a life of crime and stealing. Do you really want this?
I hope everyone will understand and try to make a difference.

I'm here to convey my ideas about your devastating article about poverty. It made me feel distressed to even think that people aren't as fortunate as I am, as well as having to work at such a young age. Your article touched my soul.
How would you like to be stuck in a grotty village where there was no clean running water? I believe that every child should be able to have a terrific education as well as have a hot meal every day. It is vital to help slums; India is home to the world's largest number of child labourers. Children can get incredibly sick in slums. Imagine if your child was extremely sick and there was no way to help them?
We have helped by doing a car wash for charity as well as doing a charity walk. As a result we made enough money to build a girls' home for I-India. There is hope for these children. Let's start donating. And save slums! It's all down to you!

I am writing to inform you about poverty in our modern world. We may have made it this far without doing much to help, however if we continue like this the world will be a disaster! Unless we stop and take notice to the poor people living a miserable life alone on the streets scavenging food or slowly dying in slums, the world won't be the same. They are humans too. Don't you think they deserve to have a good life too?
I would like to tell you that it is very doable for young children like me to help reduce poverty. For example, bake sales. In one class if every child brings in a couple of cakes you could raise a couple of hundred dollars. Another way to make money is to have a charity car wash. It raises loads of money and is lots of fun!
I hope you will help spread the word about poverty.

I am disgusted at the large amount of poverty in the world. I strongly detest the dreadful idea of not trying to stop poverty. There's a massive amount of poverty in India, which the charity I-India helps, but we can't leave it to them; we’ve got to all work together to put a permanent stop to poverty.
The poor families' lives are so dreadful you can't even imagine. Surely, you agree that we need to stop it. 20 cents feeds a child a hot meal of dahl and veggies in India. 20 cents is not a lot to me and you, but to them it's like a quarter of all the money they own! $6.30 is all it costs to fill a water tanker and give water to approximately 200 people for drinking and washing. The price has to be so low otherwise the poor Indians will not be able to afford it. They live in small overcrowded houses called slums. To me and you it might be known as "a few shacks" or "a dirty field with tiny sheds" but to them it's home. So what are we going to do about it?
Passing on the message will be a great first step. Remember, if the world works together as one, then we can permanently put a stop to this dreadful poverty worldwide.

I am writing because I read the poverty article, and I feel really uncomfortable about that. We should do something to help them. By giving a little bit of money, 20 cents is just enough to provide them clean water and a hot meal - we can help these poor people.
And if we don't help them they might get very sick and die! These people are really sad and worried; they probably live in cheap metal and wood housing that might not shelter them properly. Do you know around 60 million people under 14 are working in India?
This has to be stopped! I-India is already trying to help them. But we can too. So please send a little bit of money to I-India. Or to help even more you can put on a bake sale or a car wash and you can send that money to I-India. With that money they can provide better shelter and clean water. So please do!
I hope you agree with my point. And please send some money to these helpless people. Would you like to live in slums and drink dirty water all day?

I am expressing my deep concerns about the dreadful issue of global poverty. Have you ever noticed how comfy your bed and surroundings are? Have you ever noticed how lucky you are with lots of food and water?
It is a great idea to organise a fundraising event or you could just simply give a couple of cents to help feed the hungry. Or give old clothing and furniture to a charity you can find on the Internet wherever you are.
If we do not help fight poverty the numbers will increase. If we don't stop it now, we will have to work harder and harder as the years go on.
I am really hoping that you can help fight poverty, and are willing to use my ideas.

Text Phoebe Blanks
I am truly disturbed at how horrific poverty is these days and I am going to make a stop to it! I agree that poverty is a universal problem. People (children included) are going to sleep every night starving. However, we can prevent this by raising money and giving them the right amount of food and clean, safe drinking water.
I want to solve this by raising lots of money; taking some of my friends with me (when I'm older) to these 3rd world places and help; set up a charity shop; send the children presents for Christmas. Don't you want to have a go to help?
